Most of the pundits out there from both Republican and Democratic Parties have failed to even realize what the election is about. Those voters and non-voting protesters failed to realize why Hillary Clinton lost. The politicians running both parties have failed to understand what has happened in the Presidential election cycle. The answer is simple. This election was the anti-Establishment election.
Let's explore this anti-Establishment election for a bit, why don't we? No one expected Donald Trump to win the Republican nomination, let alone the Presidency. No one expected Bernie Sanders, an avowed Communist, to give Hillary Clinton a run for her money in the primaries. One can argue that the seeds for this election were planted during the debate over the PPACA in 2009 and 2010 with the establishment of the TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Parties. Remember Nancy Pelosi's quote about the PPACA that essentially said: "We need to pass it to see what is in it outside the fog of controversy." That was the real seed to this election, it pointed out to people that she and other political leaders thought the common American was stupid and could be hoodwinked. I say this because everything that has been included in the PPACA has been proven to be what Critics of the PPACA said was in it, not what supporters like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid said was in it.
During the course of the intervening years from then until now, even the Republicans have fallen for arrogance over the People. John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, and Paul Ryan have all talked a good game saying they were fighting for Conservative principles; but when push came to shove, they caved faster than a sinkhole in Florida! Many times Americans from Conservative areas in the country have complained about how Republicans seem to want to give Democrats everything they wanted and then some; while the Republicans kept touting how they were going to fight until the end to overturn the PPACA, create a balanced budget, and stop the supposed agenda of Obama to allow unfettered illegal immigration. Remember the government shutdown during the budget debate regarding sequestration? The Obama Administration actually went through and chose specific programs they weren't going to fund to make the government shutdown hurt harder in 2013. Did Republicans actually do anything meaningful when this information came out? No, they didn't. The most they did was make complaints, but did not follow through with legislation or any sort of impeachment proceedings to punish those that violated the People's trust in government.
These things lead to where we are today. Democrats were/are fed up with the Establishment in their Party; which is why there are calls to change the Party, including distancing it from George Soros and his family. Republicans are fed up with the Establishment in their Party, which is why many supported Trump throughout the election cycle. The only way to show that frustration was to vote for the anti-Establishment candidates, as Senators and Congressmen bring money into their States and Districts and so are much harder to replace. Heck, several years ago, the late, not-so-great, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) called his entire district nothing but racist rednecks and still got re-elected because of the military contracts he brought to his district, plus he convicted several Marines of murder before they were even tried. All but one of those Marines was found not guilty or had charges dropped completely.
Then, on top of the frustration with the lack of the Parties listening to their constituents, we have the fact that the economy has been stagnant at best. I know Obama kept touting the economy as being one of the best in history in the run-up to the election. But, if that was the case why was Hillary so soundly beaten in the Rust Belt? It was, to quote Bill Clinton, "the economy stupid!" The Rust Belt has been the hardest hit economically since the recession started. And, this area was a Democratic stronghold for the most part as these were heavily Unionized areas. Oh, yes, according to the Obama Administration Unemployment is down, but the Labor Participation Rate is the lowest it has been since March 1978, with a 62.8%! (To look at all the data from 1948 to now, just change the parameters in the search for the link.) That's right, Obama has been claiming that the Carter Economy is the greatest thing ever as it has been repeated by the Obama Administration! I suggest to those who did not live through that time or do not remember that time period to look up the news from then. It was what swept Ronald Reagan into office. So, this election is essentially the return of the Reagan Democrats from the 1980s whose main issue has been the economy and how it affected them, along with a revolution against the Establishment in both Parties.
So, once again, the reasons Trump was elected President have little to do with racism, sexism, or even bigotry. They have to do with people being frustrated by the leaders of the two major Parties, the stagnant economy, and their desire to express it. So, I ask those still complaining about the results, to please stop complaining, stop protesting, and stop destroying property. You have failed to understand the reality of the election just like those mentioned earlier.
