We have had several riots/protests/lootings using Michael Brown's death as the excuse. We have had people from Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Eric Holder, and Barack Obama saying the shooting was racist in origin. We have had the Grand Jury refusing to press charges against Darren Wilson after hearing both sides of the case, which is in itself unusual as most Grand Juries only hear the damning evidence not the exculpatory evidence.
What has been missed here by EVERYONE is that Michael Brown's death was preventable by one person: Michael Brown. Michael Brown was told to get on the sidewalk by a police officer. Did Michael Brown obey the police officer? No, he did not. At that point it was an act of civil disobedience and a misdemeanor for jaywalking. Was Michael Brown in danger of losing his life at this point? No, he was not. However, Michael Brown escalated the incident. Almost all of the witnesses to the shooting pointed out that Michael Brown had reached into Darren Wilson's police cruiser. This is where we get to the point where Darren Wilson had to make a choice, due to that escalation.
By reaching into the cruiser, Michael Brown escalated a case of civil disobedience to assault on a police officer. At this point, Darren Wilson had to decide whether or not his life was being threatened. As soon as it became assault on a police officer, it became LEGAL for Darren Wilson to use ANY AND ALL force appropriate to defend his life. This includes the use of deadly force. At this point, the choice became do I live or do I die by Darren Wilson.
During all of this, Michael Brown did not obey Darren Wilson at all. Michael Brown made the choice to continue to disobey officer Darren Wilson, and as such his death is completely on his own hands. And, to all those that believe that Darren Wilson should be blamed; remember that it is the simple choices that could have saved Michael Brown's life and ALL of those choices were Michael Brown's. He chose to refuse to obey a police officer from the beginning. He chose to escalate from civil disobedience to assault. He chose to continue disobeying a police officer. And, those three choices cost him his life.
Here is the DNA report released from the Grand Jury evidence: http://www.documentcloud.org/documents/1370729-dna-analysis-report.html along with the Crime Lab Report documenting the swabs: http://www.documentcloud.org/documents/1370724-crime-lab-report.html
Notice that DNA from both Brown and Wilson along with a trace contributor is on the SIG P229 (Sample Q19). If Wilson was not assaulted by Brown, how did that DNA get there? Also, take a close look at the DNA profiles for Q11, Q12, Q15, Q16, Q17, Q18, Q20-1, and Q21-1. Most of these are mixtures of Wilson's and Brown's DNA with trace from a third individual and are the interior and exterior of the driver's side door and Wilson's uniform. And, as the vast majority of these are reddish-brown stains (blood), it shows that Wilson was assaulted by Brown.
